What is a Cookie? PDF Print E-mail
Cookies are basically tiny pieces of information that are saved into your browsers memory. If the website you are visiting requests the cookie to be kept, then it is put into a file for future reference.

There are several different things that a cookie can record. The most common things recorded are the name and IP address of your computer, the brand of web browser you use, your operating system type, address of the web page you accessed and the last web page you were viewing. In addition, a cookie can record what information you provided to a website (i.e. - your username, your password, etc)

The reasons a website would use cookies are numerous, but most of the time it comes down to personalization and ease of use(such as MSN, My Yahoo, Excite, eBay, etc). Programmers can keep a websites content fresh and relevant, as well as collect demographic information. By using cookies you can be automatically logged into a site without having to type in your password each time.

Its important to remember that most cookies are just an attempt at improving your browsing experience, and not intrusions on your privacy. The majority of the surfing population use cookies (more than likely 99.9%). If you're still wary about cookies and want more information, check out www.cookiecentral.com
